For this small budget site, I went minimal with a corporate-paper look to reflect the professionalism of this business. It’s built on Wordpress with the help of some plugins and topped off with a Paypal IPN-MySQL processing setup to support file uploads for the order form. Admitedly, I was hoping that I’d be able to integrate Wordpress’ user-registration system into the template itself (in keeping the site consistent to the customer).

This is a physical prototype that was put together as part of the Interaction Design Praxis coursework. The product idea was aimed at busy parents in the professional work environment who have to be on “standby” for their kids but needed a discreet method of receiving, and viewing messages. And so this concept explores one of our ideas where a discreet object is used to alert and display messages.

With the help of Jonah Model’s Flash and Arduino intro, we were able to quickly deploy a Flash and Arduino setup successfully on OS X Leopard. For this project, we used Flash to send the signals we need to control the Arduino so there was minimal modifications to Jonah’s sample sketch. We simply let Flash do all the “processing”, deciding what the Arduino should do.

But on the physical prototyping side of things, we emptied out a mechanical pencil and filled it with wires to get the LEDs connected to the Arduino board. We placed three LEDs on the clip to represent the urgency of the message and a fourth LED in the tip of the pencil fakes the message projection. The original idea was to illuminate invisible ink but due to the time constraints, we were unable to secure a the UV LED as well as the vibration motor we had originally intended to place in there.

Complains about the theme I hastily develop for Octobox centered around the immature image presented. Cute graphics help impress the instructor, but during the SFU Open House 2008, we found that the older demographic has more interest in the project. And so, with the website deadline coming up, I hammered out a significantly compliant website and whipped out a brand new theme that featured the existing Octobox graphics and deep ocean colors from our mascot.

The Submission Series is a no-points format wrestling tournament held a couple of times a year around BC. It features some of the best grapplers around while the rules format fosters an all-out style of play. This website was built using Wordpress and features a clean black-white theme that represents the straightforward nature of this tournament- you win by submission. The content is basic but more stuff will be added soon.

I didn’t expect some of my web buddies having difficulty getting MooTools to work. Well, the solution was downright simple- The demo page has a READ HERE FIRST that clearly states that a piece of extra code has to be added to the existing javascript for all the demos.

First, we stumble across a team essentially ripping off our work. Then, we are behind again and the prototype isn’t going anywhere. And finally, a project revision- this late into the term! So with one night to completely change things up (not really, just tweak it), I sat down hammering out slides, Brian quickly assembled a prototype and Manuel managed to work out a Widget. The presentation rocked, and we established ourselves at the top level of the class again.

The presentation plan was to start by announcing the revision, and then going over the concept and the ideas supporting before showing off the prototype and what we’ve learned from it. Rather than having a lineup of photos, I decided to hold everything together in place with icons that exemplified what we wanted to say. And it worked!

So next Thursday, we’ll be deploying our prototype and poster for the SFU Open House. I hope to put together a neat WP theme for the Octoblog by then…

Seriously though, get 4GB if your Mac supports it. But don’t buy it from Apple- do research on which RAM is compatible and it will save you hundreds.

Alright, well I’m not happy with it but a solid version was due on Valentine’s Day. And so here it is. I still have a day or two before the printers take a swing at this door sized poster, so I’ll try to dedicate another session or two adding more detail into the poster. The theme is my iteration of Manuel’s original vision of the poster and it incorporates several key ideas. We thought that using Tado as inspiration would be great to help guide us approach this poster.

I worked with the idea of having a “road to sustainability” that lead to the top, despite the fact that the hierarchy would retain the top-to-bottom feel. Like all my other posters, I like to take random risks and so this seems to be the big risk that I would take. The reason is that the road may seem to lead away from the idea itself because the hierarchy causes you to take the road of sustainability the “wrong” way. But ultimately, what I want to convey is that in general, we are still at the bottom of that road.

I forgot this blog even existed. Anyway, now tasked with the SFU Open House presentation poster, I’ve restarted with a revised theme in mind and here are some “Friends of Octobox”, creatures who assume the form factor of our purple mascot and will be featured as guests on the poster. I present you with puppybox, turtlebox and moobox.
